Looking for a new hobby?
We're not going to try to convince you why needlepoint is the best hobby (okay, maybe we will a little) - BUT we will help you get started!
what you need to know

mesh size
Mesh size = the number of intersections within an inch!
13 and 18 inch mesh are the two most commonly used, with 13 mesh being the most beginner-friendly. The higher the mesh count, the more stitches you will be doing!

threads
Often called "kitting your canvas", picking out threads can be the most exciting part of a new project! The exact thread you use depends on the mesh size and what your project will be used for. The most commonly used types of thread are cotton, silk, wool, and silk/wool. For your first canvas, I would recommend looking into Cotton thread as it is easy to find, sturdy, and great to learn with!
- DMC Pearl Cotton Size 5 (18 mesh)
- DMC Pearl Cotton Size 3 (13 mesh)

Basic stitches
Know the big three tent stitches and you can accomplish anything! These three stitches look the same on the front of your canvas, but their coverage will vary. I recommend looking up easy graphics, videos, or TikToks to learn these! There's plenty of resources out there - you'll be an expert in no time!
Half Cross Stitch - an easy one to learn, but coverage is light (meaning there may be some "holes" in your finished product)
Continental Stitch - great for weaving in and out of your detailed projects while providing a medium amount of coverage
Basketweave Stitch - this stitch uses more thread than the others, but will leave you with the most coverage!

COMMON QUESTIONS
In the needlepoint world, we call this “color swapping”! You most commonly see it as choosing threads in the color scheme of your choice, even though the canvas may be different colors. Or if you would like to have your design painted a completely different color scheme, message us and we’ll let you know if we can make it happen!
Once you've stitched your project, you're ready to send it to be finished into its final form! While there's lots of great finishers who operate online, I would recommend going into your LNS (local needlepoint store) to make sure your project will be finished into the item of your dreams! Keep in mind the turnaround time can vary, so be patient and trust the process. In the meantime, grab another project to stitch!
